On the frontline
Dr. Laura Falvey
During the COVID-19 pandemic, I worked full time as a frontline NHS doctor across multiple specialities, spending the peak in Intensive Care supporting my critical care colleagues. It was our COVID intensive care unit which was eye-opening. Our ventilators were occupied by very sick, relatively young people and, aside from COVID, the unifying factor was that every patient was overweight or obese, with the majority of them also having type 2 diabetes. Disappointingly, these patients did not do well despite the best efforts of all involved.
As a hospital doctor we all spend a lot of time treating people who have complications of metabolic syndromes such as type 2 diabetes and obesity. We are often helping patients once their conditions have progressed to cause irreversible damage. In obstetrics, otherwise healthy women are much more likely to experience complications of pregnancy and childbirth. The latest national statistics from NHS Digital show that obesity was a factor in 876,000 hospital admissions in England in 2018/19 and this number is rising year on year.
Reset Health offers people and medical professionals the chance to recognise obesity as the complex, multi-factorial condition that it is, dispelling the myth that if you ‘eat less and move more’ you’ll lose weight and become healthier. Many other factors such as hormone regulation, genetics, mental health and social and financial circumstances are often overlooked. We live in a society where obesity is simultaneously stigmatised and normalised, where the majority of adults in the UK are overweight or obese (63%), and even more concerning, 20% of all children. This signals an urgent need for something new to improve our health and to prevent further complications to our patients.
Holistic and multidisciplinary
Last year I travelled to India to consolidate and deepen my knowledge, graduating in Ashtanga and Vinyasa yoga. I am passionate about improving our knowledge of the scientific explanations behind the benefits of yoga and sharing this with others through teaching. And this is why Reset Health is so promising. Not only is it driven by innovation in medical science, but it draws upon what I believe is essential – a holistic, multi-disciplinary approach. We focus on preventing the debilitating complications which will occur later on - the ones I have been treating throughout my hospital career so far. I will integrate my medical experience and holistic outlook into our diverse and highly experienced team at Reset Health.
