Committed to research
Prof. Barbara McGowan
I am an obesity physician with a huge passion for obesity research and understanding how hormones affect appetite control. I have been looking after people with obesity for many years and I understand the complexities around their conditions. I am proud to be part of the Reset Health medical and scientific board which is made up of international leaders in the field of obesity, diabetes and renal disease, dietetics and psychology.
Obesity is everywhere but it remains largely misunderstood by everyone! Both the person in the street and their health care professionals. This a major factor in the high levels of stigma associated with overweight and obesity. Society is continually informed through intense media coverage that obesity is simple and easily manipulated, when the causes of obesity are complex and multifaceted, encompassing biological, genetic, environmental, socioeconomic, social and psychological factors. Because obesity is multifactorial and associated with several complications, it requires a multidisciplinary approach to care.
We know that obesity increases the risks of many other illnesses and is associated with several complications, including metabolic complications such as Type 2 diabetes (T2DM), hypertension, dyslipidemia, fatty liver disease, coronary artery and cerebrovascular disease, gallstones, infertility and increased risk of several cancers; mental health complications such as psychosocial dysfunction including anxiety and depression; Mechanical complications such as osteoarthritis and back pain, and now also COVID-19. Together, these complications powerfully reduce quality of life and exacerbate obesity-associated mortality. Even before COVID-19, obesity reduced life expectancy by 5–20 years.
Resetting is personal
Reset Health provides a comprehensive clinical review to assess the severity of these complications and metabolic risk. Our assessment highlights clinical issues that need to be tackled for each member. People living with obesity should understand how the disease is affecting their health, as improving complications of obesity should be the great driver and motivator rather than just weight loss. The focus on improving health is for me one of the most important aspects of the programme.
For people with metabolic disease, especially pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes, our programme can help people to lose weight, achieve remission and get big improvements in glycemic control and other metabolic parameters. Many people living with Type 2 diabetes are told that their condition is a one way street which worsens with time. I would like everyone to know that Type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes can be reversed and Reset Health will help people achieve and maintain their metabolic goals.
I feel very passionate about educating, empowering and helping people living with obesity to achieve their goals and improve their quality of life. This is why I am so lucky to be part of Reset Health’s vibrant and excellent team dedicated to improving the health of those living with obesity.
